Working great in my kid's room

I recently purchased the roller blind and a hub 2 for use in my kids room. They had a manual blackout shade for a long time that broke and was rarely used anyways. They are really excited to have easy to use blinds that they can open by simply pressing the button on the hub. I think they use it every day when they wake up.

The aluminum top bar is very sturdy and easy to attach/detach from the wall-mounting hardware. The shade material seems like it will last a long time as well. There are some plastic bits on the end, but I think everything is well made and should stand the test of time.

The installation process was somewhat involved since I had to do some sizing/cutting to fit in the space, but the included cutter that screws on to the mounting bar made things not too bad. And now that I've done one, I could do more in the future a lot faster.

I run Home Assistant and the matter integration for the blinds is really nice. They can be fully controlled via matter and the position reporting is fast and accurate. This also made it easy to auto-close the blinds at sunset along with my other sunset automations as I like to keep them all in one place instead of separate automations in separate apps.

Quick install

Switchbot provided great documentation that, once read through, made for a quick install. I purchased the 2 pack and after the first one, which I had scarred the metal tube somewhat and stripped the screws (which wasn't terrible since it the end cap couldn't move after installation anyway), was able to install the 2nd within an hour. I appreciated the provider placement of markers to guide installation making it pretty foolproof once you watched the video fully.

My First Roller Shades

I had been looking at roller shades for awhile, but didn't purchase any because of how expensive they are. I received an email from SwitchBot about their roller shades and I ended up purchasing two. One came with a small dent in it, which made sliding it to adjust a little more difficult, but ultimately played a small roll in the overall set up. The dent was in the back so I didn't try to get it replaced as I would not see it once it was set up. All the parts were in the boxes and the installation instructions were easy to follow.

I am usually a measure twice, cut once type of person. I tried to be lazy though and I did not measure from the top of my one window because I had not taken down my window blinds yet. That window did not have 90 degree corners as the top was slightly shorter than the bottom. I thought this would be troublesome to have to redo the cut when it was so small of a change. I found that the cutting tool actually worked really well for this. I was pleasantly surprised. The initial shade took me about 45 minutes to install due to my own mistake and having to recut it. The second shade took about 20 minutes.

I use Home Assistant for my set up. Once the shades were installed and in my SwitchBot app, Home Assistant recognized them right away via the Bluetooth integration. I also have a SwitchBot Hub 2 so I played around with the Matter integration. Both worked fine for me, but I ended up going with the Bluetooth integration as I didn't need to share this with any other hubs. I set up automation for my morning wake up routine that opens the blinds and it worked flawlessly. I work from home so I also have it lower the blinds once I start work to reduce the glare on my monitor. In the evening, when it gets dark, the shades close.

If I had purchased blinds that were pre-cut, it would have cost me around four times more than these blinds. While the installation process takes time, it is worth it with how much money I saved. The process should be easy for most people (especially ones who are not like me and measure the right way). I have seven more windows that need new shades and I plan to use SwitchBot roller shades for these as well. I would recommend these for anyone who is looking to get smart blinds.

Easy-ish install. Great performance.

I ordered 2 and the first took some time to figure out the install process but the second went much quicker. Shades work great. I put the solar panel up and set it to respond to the light levels throughout the day. So far it is cutting down on the heat in my upstairs studio and the AC has been kicking on much less. Should pay for itself over time in energy bills alone.

Can I cut the Roller Shade fabric?

Yes you can cut the SwitchBot's Roller Shade fabric. However, using custom fabric is not recommended.

Can I Use Multiple SwitchBot Roller Shades Side by Side for a Wide Window?

Yes. You can freely combine S, M, L, and XL Roller Shades to fit the width of your window. However, when connecting two or more Roller Shades, please be aware that light gaps may appear at the seams. This is due to slight length discrepancies between the roller mechanism and fabric at the upper connection points of multiple units.

Can I Use SwitchBot Remote to Open and Close SwitchBot Roller Shade?

Yes, you can add open and close actions for the Roller shade to the Remote by tapping it in the SwitchBot app and assigning them to the convex and concave buttons.

Matter Compatibility for SwitchBot Roller Shade

You can sync your Roller Shade with the Apple Home app or Google Home app as a secondary device using Hub 2 or Hub Mini Matter Enabled. The Apple Home app allows for fully closing, fully opening, and opening/closing to a specific percentage.

Instructions for SwitchBot Roller Shade Group Feature

SwitchBot Roller Shades can be grouped for easier control, supporting up to 8 devices in one group.

When you create a group, the first device you select becomes the main device, while the others are designated as secondary devices. Once grouped, all devices will respond together, opening or closing simultaneously and adjusting to the same percentage level.

How Long Does It Take to Fully Charge SwitchBot Roller Shade?

SwitchBot Roller Shade controller (2 meters) has a Type C charging port. It takes approximately 8 hours to fully charge the battery.

Please note that using a charging cable longer than 2 meters will result in a longer charging time for the battery.

You can charge your SwitchBot Roller Shade using the following methods:

1. Using the controller charging port for convenient charging.

2. Install the dedicated solar panel (sold separately) designed for SwitchBot Roller Shade for charging. When you connect the dedicated Solar Panel to the Roller Shade, the sun icon will appear in the app.

3. Use a 5V1A charging adapter (not included) and a charging cable (not included) to charge directly through the solar panel Type-C port. A ⚡ icon will be displayed to indicate that the device is charging.
